Blue bags for 2016/17 are on their way

Blue bags for 2016/17 are on their way

16 February 2016

This week more than five million blue bags for household waste will start to be delivered by Veolia on behalf of Wokingham Borough Council.

It will take approximately five weeks to deliver 80 bags, in two rolls of 40, to more than 64,000 households. All bags should be delivered to every property by the end of March and cover the period from April 2016 to March 2017.

Collection days remain unchanged and any residents who are unsure of their day should visit the bin day page or call (0118) 974 6000.

Residents who have already registered as a larger household of five or more will automatically receive their additional bags by July. Anyone who needs to register should email: customerservice@wokingham.gov.uk or contact customer services by calling (0118) 974 6000.

Residents are encouraged to recycle as much as possible at the kerbside and they can recycle food cans, drink cans, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and aerosols. Other materials, such as glass and TetraPak, can be taken to local bring banks: details can be found on the council’s website. Any residents who need an additional or replacement black recycling box can request one online, email: customerservice@wokingham.gov.uk or call (0118) 974 6000.

Cllr Angus Ross, executive member for environment, said: "Although this allocation of 80 blue bags, for a family of four, equates to one and a half bags a week we hope that resident’s will use less than this so that we can continue to reduce the borough’s overall general waste that is sent to landfill.

"Currently we pay central government £82.60 for every tonne of waste we send to landfill, which ultimately costs the local tax payer and diverts money away from our frontline services."

Residents will also receive a leaflet to accompany their blue bags that includes information on waste and recycling as well as how they can sign-up to the council’s optional paid-for garden waste service.

All residents should receive their 80 official blue bags by the end of March but anyone wishing to know when they will be delivered can do so by visiting the blue bag allocation page.
