A 14-year-old from Dinton Activity Centre Juniors is due to represent the Wokingham Borough club at the RYA Honda Youth Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) regional finals on 13 September.
Joshua Lee-Paterson can take part in the event at the Southampton Boat Show after winning a regional heat held last weekend (23 August) at Silver Wings Sailing Club in Staines.
The championships are being run by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and Honda, who invited clubs and RYA affiliated training centres, such as Dinton, to take part and hold training days and heats to determine who to take forward to the Southampton finals and the chance to win a RIB. There were 14 regional finals with a winner in each age group (ages eight to 12 and 13 to 16). The centre at Dinton organised two weekends of training and hosted a centre heat selecting Joshua and 10-year-old David Gornall to compete at Staines. Joshua came first place in his age group, and David third in his.
Cllr Angus Ross, Wokingham Borough Council’s executive member for environment, said: “Well done to all the youngsters who participated in the Dinton Activity Centre club heats and in particular to Josh and David who brought home medals from the regional final.
"It was David’s first time competing, so he did very well to overcome nerves and show off his smooth fast driving. We’re extremely proud of Joshua who has now won three gold medals and would like to wish him the very best at the finals.
"I’m delighted the centre is now so well established and can support these and many other outdoor initiatives."
