For the fifth year running, Wokingham Borough Council has topped the national council tax collection charts for all local authorities.
Council taxpayers in Wokingham Borough continue to benefit from the most efficient local authority tax collection system in the country with the borough council collecting 99.5 per cent of the council tax it was owed for 2017/18 – more than £112million.
The national average collection rate for unitary authorities was 96.9 per cent. Each percentage point for Wokingham Borough Council equates to over £1 million of council tax – meaning that the efficiency of the council’s collection systems effectively generated in excess of £2 million more than if it had been an average performing authority.
Cllr Julian McGhee-Sumner, executive member for finance and corporate resources said: “At a time when demand is increasing, our high collection helps to soften the financial challenges we face.
“I would like to thank all those residents who pay their council tax on time. This supports more than 200 council services – from caring for the elderly and those with physical and learning disabilities to emptying bins and providing modern leisure and recreation facilities.”
The council will be continuing efforts to collect the remaining 0.5 per cent throughout the year.
