A free bike bonanza event was held on Thursday 5 April with more than 100 people enjoying a day of fun-filled cycling activities at the FBC centre in Finchampstead.
The event, organised by the My Journey Wokingham, included information, advice and activities for adults and children along with a selection of children’s and adults bikes for people to borrow to try out cycling, including balance bikes, recumbent tricycles, and even an electric bike.
More than 48 bikes were loaned out during the day for individuals to give cycling a go and another 33 people brought their own bikes along for the 'Doctor Bike' surgery and security marking.
Attendees also enjoyed a bike-themed treasure hunt, a puncture repair workshop, and even made smoothies on a pedal-powered smoothie bike. The My Journey team was also on hand, offering information and free gifts.
Sprockets Cycling Club from Arborfield added to the fun by offering mountain biking activities for children including bumps, jumps and bike limbo.
“There’s huge demand for cycling training, particularly for children, in the borough so it was brilliant to see such a great turn out to our Easter bike bonanza. We’ve already had some great feedback, with many parents saying that their children are now cycling independently, which is fantastic” said Jill Bissell, Wokingham Borough Council’s cycle training co-ordinator.
“My Journey Wokingham is a project to promote sustainable travel alternatives in Wokingham Borough - it can also help if you are looking for local cycle routes, walking maps or public transport information. We hope to plenty of events throughout the year for people of all ages including our summer Bike Bonanza on 29 August - keep an eye on the My Journey website for details.”
