Christmas celebrations began in style as Wokingham Borough schools, Berkshire Maestro’s Bracknell Music Centre Concert Band and Chance to Dance Stars CIC, performed a dazzling, virtual Christmas school carol concert. The event shared the performers’ love of singing, celebrating and sprinkling festive cheer.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, this is the first time Wokingham Borough Mayor’s Christmas carol concert has taken place virtually. The full-length carol concert has been shared to parents and families privately. A shortened video has been shared on the council’s social media page.
Many children from Wokingham Borough schools took part in the concert including Grazeley Parochial CE (Aided) Primary School, St Teresa’s Catholic Academy, Polehampton CE Infant and Junior School, Farley Hill Primary School, Forest School and Windmill Primary School, plus performances by Berkshire Maestro’s Bracknell Music Centre Concert Band and Chance to Dance Stars CIC.
Borough school children performed festive songs and carols including; A Christmas Welcome, Midnight, Good News, Good News!, Sleigh Ride, Love Shone Down, The Greatest Gift, The Journey of Magi and Merry Christmas Everyone.
Each year, the Mayor chooses a charity or organisation to benefit from fundraising during their time in the office. This year, Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Keith Baker MBE, has chosen Chance to Dance Stars CIC, a dance school for students with disabilities and their families in the local community. Founded in 2013, the dance classes have received popular appraise by local families, resulting in the charity expanding to nine dance classes which take place in Reading, Coley and Bracknell.
All proceeds raised from the virtual Christmas carol concert will go to Chance to Dance Stars.
Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Keith Baker MBE said: “I am delighted that this year’s Christmas carol concert has taken place virtually. Borough children have worked very hard practising their chosen carols and songs, and I am very proud of this fantastic performance.
“This year, we are raising money for Chance to Dance Stars CIC, a dance school for students with disabilities and their families. If you feel able to, please donate via Chance to Dance Stars’ fundraising page on their website.
“Finally, I would like to extend a huge well done to everyone who took part in the Christmas carol concert and wish everybody a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”
