Helping people to find support in the community

Helping people to find support in the community

02 December 2015

The involve Community Navigator project is up and running!

We have received funding to set up and embed a Community Navigator network across the Wokingham Borough, supporting people to get more involved with their communities, find out what’s going on in their area and access the wealth of support available from the voluntary and community sector.

What is Community navigation?

Community Navigation is an assisted and guided process to enable people to access local community organisations and voluntary groups across Wokingham Borough. Initially people will be referred to the scheme by GPs and other healthcare professionals, if they are considered to be in need of additional, possibly non-medical, support to give them a better sense of wellbeing, social inclusion and independence.

Once the person has been referred, they will meet with a volunteer Community Navigator who will discuss their needs with them and, from there, decide where best to go next, signpost them, give details and possibly make an ‘ice breaker’ call on the individual’s behalf if the client chooses.

Additional support could include locating a local diabetic support group, a befriending service, locating a volunteer driving scheme to help with hospital appointments, or finding a club where the client can pursue a particular beloved hobby - anything that can enrich and improve a person’s life and increase mobility and involvement in society: that is, navigating them around their community to meet their needs and match their interests.

Volunteers needed!

Do you have good communication skills? Are you calm and approachable? Could you spare 6 to 8 hours a week? Would you like to do something to help your community?

We are looking for volunteers to join us as community navigators! You will be trained and supported in your role, and continue to receive support throughout your time as a volunteer.

We are also looking out for volunteers to help with mapping and research work to add to the list of ‘what is on in my community’. This is a volunteering opportunity that can be done remotely if people choose to do it that way.

If you are interested in either positions, please contact us to find out more. Call our Community Navigator Coordinator, Steve McSweeney, on 01344 383515 or email: Steve.McSweeney@involve.community
