A fun-filled open weekend took place at Wokingham’s boxing gym, BXGFit, in Peach Place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March 2022.
Wokingham Borough Council invested into the state-of-the-art boxing fitness gym following an increased demand in combat sports and fitness sessions nationally and across the borough.
The event was attended by residents, gym members and guests. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to officially open the gym by Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Keith Baker MBE and executive member for environment and leisure Cllr Parry Batth.
Free taster classes
During the weekend, the council’s sport and leisure team held a series of free taster classes to new visitors and existing members who brought a friend or family member to the event. The free taster classes included boxercise, junior and family boxing, circuits and kickboxing.
Competitions to win vouchers to redeem against boxing classes and merchandise were also awarded to people who took part in the gym’s various challenges throughout the weekend.
The weekend challenges included:
· How many aqua bag circuits can you do in one minute?
· How many speed bag hits can you get in a row?
· How quickly can you burn 25 calories on the air assault bike?
· How quickly can you run the track whilst attached to the rocket runner?
· How fast can you row to 500 meters?
New visitors and gym members were invited to take a look at the brand-new boxing equipment which included a rocket runner, fluid weights and skipping ropes.
Facilities and equipment
Residents that attended the opening were also able to explore BXGFit’s premises and equipment, including the training ring, a functional storage rig with three fitness stations, a functional cube rig with attachments for four to six fitness stations, aquabags, heavy bags, uppercut bags and more.
Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Keith Baker MBE said, “I am delighted to officially open Wokingham’s first boxing fitness gym BXGFit. Now that Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, it is great to see the community come together and get active.”
Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure said, “BXGFit’s open weekend was a great event with residents getting involved in various activities and challenges. With the opening of BXGFit, we hope to see more residents leading happy, healthy lives.”
Supports the Leisure Strategy
BXGFit will support the council’s Leisure Strategy (2021-2025) to enhance its leisure provision within the borough, supporting healthy weight management and helping borough residents to increase the amount of exercise in line with public health guidelines, whilst providing high quality facilities maintained to a high standard.

For residents who were unable to attend the open weekend, BXGFit will be running two open evenings on Tuesday 5 and Thursday 7 April from 4pm to 8pm. Free taster classes will be available for new visitors and existing members who bring a friend or family member to the event.
