Colleagues from Wokingham Borough Council and local voluntary sector services are getting their sleeping bags and blankets ready for a night under the stars in Howard Palmer Gardens to raise money for the Salvation Army.

The team are also hoping to raise awareness about the support available from the council for those who may find themselves homeless within the borough. They are also inviting the community to get involved by taking part, donating or helping to spread the word.

Anyone wanting to join the council’s team and take part in the sleep out on 24 November is invited to sign up in advance to ensure there is enough food and space for everyone attending.  Residents can also pop along on the night to have a cup of tea and show their support even if they are not able to stay the night.

Raising money for Salvation Army

Donation can also be made via the Wokingham Salvation Army just giving page with all money raised helping the charity to provide support for the homeless, as well as unconditional friendship and practical help to people in crisis and in need.

Cllr Stephen Conway, executive member for housing said, “Homelessness can affect anyone and sadly, during these unprecedented times, many of our residents are struggling. We are committed to protecting our vital services to ensure those who cannot afford safe accommodation have the help, support and protection they need.

“The Salvation Army is just one of our amazing partners that we work with to support those in our community. I am delighted that our Wokingham Borough Council colleagues and partners from the voluntary sector are taking part in this sleep out on 24 November to raise awareness of the support available to those in our borough who find themselves homeless. We wish them well as they also help to raise vital fund for the Salvation Army".

Open to the elements

The team will be swapping home luxuries and a comfortable bed for a sleeping bag outside in Howard Palmer Gardens which is open to the elements. They’ll be braving the weather to gain an insight into homelessness at night, experiencing cold, autumnal temperatures, uncomfortable sleeping arrangements and limited sleep.
