In support of National Apprenticeship Week, Wokingham Borough Council is encouraging both local businesses and residents to consider the benefits of the apprenticeship scheme.
Apprenticeships are an exciting option for both apprentice and employer with companies able to take on apprentices at all different levels, from school leavers to people that want to further their careers or change career direction completely.
Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to earn while you learn with hands-on experience and the chance to train while you work, with 20 per cent of your time spent learning new skills largely at college, university or through a dedicated training provider.
Wokingham Borough Council employ more than forty apprentices in a variety of positions who are studying and gaining vital experience to become qualified in their chosen field including chartered surveyors, software developers and social workers.
“I feel very lucky to have this opportunity to train and earn at the same time. I wanted to do this degree for a long time but could not afford to take time off to study due to my young family commitments so it was the perfect opportunity,” said Luda Trivett, a social worker apprentice employed by the council.
“I was already working within the adult services department at the council alongside other social workers. I found the work very rewarding and wanted to learn more. With this qualification I will be able to progress further in my career and in return the council will have a very committed newly qualified social worker.”
88 per cent of apprentices stay on in their place of work after completing an apprenticeship and there are a wide selection of apprenticeships available, covering lots of different job roles.
“We value the dedication and support that all our apprentices provide across the whole council and we are proud of the apprenticeship opportunities we currently have available”, said Cllr John Kasier, Deputy Leader at Wokingham Borough Council.
“Hiring an apprentice is a productive and effective way for any organisation to grow talent and develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce”.
