Last week the council’s decision making executive approved plans to expand Farley Hill Primary School to two forms of entry (FE) for September 2022 and to apply to change its catchment area to include the new Arborfield Green development and the Poperinghe Way development.
Farley Hill Primary moved into its new site in Arborfield Green earlier this year, formally opening its doors to pupils in September 2021. The school retained its original size of 1FE when moving to the new site, however under the approved plans the school would be expanded to 2FE from 2022 to allow more local children to attend
The new site has the space to expand to three FE when it is needed.
The council will apply to the School Adjudicator to amend the admissions arrangement for the school to include all of the Arborfield major development and the Poperinghe Way development. The council expects the response in good time for preparations for national offer day in April 2022.
The old school site in Farley Hill village will be released under the plans, with further decisions to come on whether it is re-purposed or sold.
This will be good news for families living on or near Arborfield Green, as restrictions set out by the Department for Education on catchment areas that proved problematic with families applying for the 2021 intake will be eased by the change.
Councillor Graham Howe, executive member for children’s services, said: “This is great news as it means that we can set the wheels in motion and provide clarity for children and families.
“Due to the timing of the school move last year, there were certain things that could not be put into place as we had passed the Department for Education timescales, so could not legally be done. We have listened to concerns from families and are working hard to make sure all families in the Arborfield Green development and the Poperinghe Way development can have the opportunity for their children attend the new Farley Hill Primary School.”
Consultation on school admissions arrangements is now open and we invite all interested parties to take part on our Engage platform.
