Drainage maintenance on more than 100 roads

Drainage maintenance on more than 100 roads

More than 100 roads across Wokingham Borough will see drainage works take place this winter.

Highway grips, which are shallow channels connecting the edge of the carriageway to a roadside ditch, are being cut across the roads to help drain rain water from roads in rural locations.

The works will require road closures in January and February on 51 roads.

All road closures will take place during off-peak daytime hours, between 9am and 4pm, to ensure traffic can move around easily at peak times, especially on commuter routes.

The programme began in November, with work being done under mobile working or two-way lights.

Wokingham Borough Council re-cuts the grips annually as part of its drainage maintenance programme.

Road closures have to be put in place to safeguard engineers and allow them to complete the works efficiently.

As this is a rolling programme subject to change, it is difficult to list the dates below when each road is due to be done.

However advance notice signs will go up on approach roads, and a diversion route will

be signposted while the work is being done.

Vehicle access will be maintained to properties within the closures, but there may be occasions when residents are asked to wait or use the diversion.

“We thank residents for their patience while we carry out this important maintenance to our roadside drainage systems,” said Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for highways and transport.

“With the whole programme planned for during off-peak hours we hope to ensure the road network is free of closures at the busiest times. This important work will allow us to keep the network running at its best

no matter how wet the weather is.”
