Get on your bikes for prizes this festive season

Cyclists of all abilities can mark the countdown to Christmas by taking part in an exciting seasonal riding scheme.

Wokingham Borough Council's My Journey team has joined forces with Love To Ride Wokingham to promote Winter Wheelers in the run-up to this year’s festivities.

The initiative launches on 1 December and is open to everyone, whether they're a new rider or highly experienced.

Participants can ride their bike anywhere for as long or as little as they like and, regardless of distance cycled, everyone who signs up will be in the running for prizes including cycling trousers, gloves and jackets in a daily draw.

The more days that people ride, the more entries they will have into a grand draw to win a new electric bike worth up to £1,500 on Christmas Day, when the scheme closes. There is also a Christmas Eve prize of a £300 gift card to be spent in a local cycle shop.

To take part in Winter Wheelers, residents can register online in just 30 seconds then log each ride by 3pm the following day, either on the Love to Ride Wokingham website or through cycling apps like Strava.

As usual, the top riders for numbers of miles and trips will be displayed on Love To Ride Wokingham’s monthly leaderboard.

Workplaces are also encouraged to participate through the Love to Ride Business scheme, which includes access to a platform showing the combined impact staff are having through riding.

Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for highways and transport, said: "We're proud to support Love To Ride Wokingham through our My Journey initiative and would urge as many people as possible to become Winter Wheelers.

"It's so easy to fit into your daily routine as even a 10-minute spin will count and this will show that cycling is a year-round activity, not just for the warmer months.

"Love To Ride Wokingham has attracted hundreds of new riders by helping them to make cycling a fun and integral part of their everyday lives, and Winter Wheelers will build on this success.

"By getting more people on their bikes we can reduce pollution and improve air quality while helping residents become more active and keeping traffic moving across our borough."

Love to Ride would also like to hear from businesses who are willing to provide prizes next year. For more information, email support@lovetoride.net.
