Wokingham Borough Council is asking for residents’ input to help shape a brand-new strategy aimed at tackling financial hardship and related challenges in the borough, and ensuring all residents have access to the support they need.
Helping people facing financial hardship
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about many challenges for local people, impacting their standards of living and health and wellbeing. By taking part in the survey, residents will help the council understand more about the issues that are affecting people, with key topics including family and home life, employment and income, and access to support.
The information will be used alongside other key data points to help inform the strategy and ensure the council has the right support in place to help residents who are on low income, or who are facing financial hardship for the first time.
Shape the council's brand-new strategy
John Halsall, Leader of the Council, said: “Our borough has consistently been one of the least deprived unitary authority areas in England (ranking least deprived in 2019 Indices of Multiple Deprivation), but we want to help people on low income. We’ve also seen an increase in people facing employment and financial insecurity for the first time because of the pandemic.
“Since the start of the year, we have been working closely with residents, partners in the voluntary sector, and council colleagues to understand more about the financial hardship that exists in the borough. We’re using this information to build on the support we already offer, and to create a plan to tackle the issues further, so we can ensure the right help is in place for the people who need it. This isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about long-term changes that will make a real difference to our residents.
“Now, we’re asking for further input from people living in the borough to help shape our strategy. The survey only takes around 5 minutes to complete, and the insights will be crucial to getting it right and ensure we are offering the right support to our communities”
Take part in the survey
This early engagement will be followed by further consultation on the draft strategy in early 2022, to make sure residents’ views are considered at every stage.
The engagement is taking place on the council’s new online platform, Engage Wokingham Borough, which is being used to improve how the local authority listens to residents and ensure there is a two-way dialogue.
You can sign up to Engage Wokingham Borough to take part in the survey, which is open to all residents, via the Engage Wokingham Borough webpage. If you need help with the survey, please call the council on 0118 974 6000.
