Wokingham Borough Council are repairing the 185-year-old bridge, because it is showing signs of deterioration, as well as building a concrete saddle to strengthen the bridge’s capacity for modern vehicle loadings and waterproofing.
This is a major project, but once finished the bridge is not expected to need significant maintenance for some time.
The works will be carried out between 23 May and 31 July. The road will be closed over the bridge, but pedestrians and walking cyclists will have access across. Residents and businesses will still have access to their properties.
It's taking place during the summer because the river level is lower.
The diversion will be via Wargrave Road, A4 New Bath Road and the A3032 – or this route in reverse.
Changes to bus services
Courtney and Arriva bus services will not be able to serve the Twyford Crossroads stop (next to Zappas). Passengers should instead use the Wargrave Road stop opposite Twyford Bowling Club.
Buses towards Reading will travel over the crossroads to the A4 New Bath Road, turn left at the roundabout to continue along the A4 towards the Wee Waif where they will rejoin their routes. Services towards Wokingham and High Wycombe will travel this route in reverse.
