Wokingham Borough libraries kick start their annual Summer Reading Challenge!

Wokingham Borough libraries kick start their annual Summer Reading Challenge!

02 July 2019

Wokingham Borough libraries have launched their annual summer reading challenge, ‘Space Chase’, encouraging children from across the borough to keep reading over the summer holidays.

The summer reading challenge is open to 4-11 year olds with this year’s theme ‘Space Chase’ taking inspiration from the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Children are required to borrow and read any six library books from any of our libraries over the summer. They will team up with futuristic family The Rockets for an exciting space mission as they track down books nabbed by a mischievous band of aliens.

As children work their way through each of their six library books, they will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells. By adding these stickers to their collectable mission folders, young readers will help the Rockets solve clues, dodge asteroids and discover the missing books, having lots of fun and adventures along the way.

Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure said, “The Summer Reading Challenge is back and better than ever. `This year all of our libraries across Wokingham Borough are participating and will be on hand with some great books, some great rewards and a lot of fun.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to indulge our childrens’ imaginations, help them become more independent and build a sense of achievement. It also helps prevent the tendency for children’s reading to dip over the holidays and supports the successful transition between year groups and stages. I hope it will inspire children across our towns and neighbourhoods to use their local library and discover some great books throughout the summer holiday and beyond.”

To take part in Space Chase, all children need to do is sign up at their nearest library, where they will be given a collector folder to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey.

Space Chase launches in libraries across Wokingham Borough on Monday July 1 and runs until Sunday September 1 and staff will be on hand to assist both parents and children.

There is a whole programme of events and activities planned at Wokingham Borough libraries for families over the summer to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge, including Fred in the Shed, Rocketeers Workshops and much more.

The main challenge is for children aged four to eleven, with a Little Explorers Challenge for children aged four and under. Teens can join in the fun again with the Teen Read Challenge
