Wokingham Borough Council is asking residents for their views on a proposal to increase taxi fares for the first time since 2010, following a request submitted to the Licensing and Appeals Committee. The proposal is a request by the Licensed Hackney Carriages (Taxis) and looks to increase the fares for hackneyed taxis to reflect increases in the cost of living.
Responses to the consultation can be sent via email to licensing@wokingham.gov.uk or via post to the Public Protection Partnership, Theale Library, Church Street, Theale, Berkshire, RG7 5BZ. The consultation is open until 16 February.
The Licensing and Appeals Committee discussed the proposal at their meeting on 26 January and agreed to put them out for consultation. If no objections to the proposals are received, the proposed new fares will apply from 1 March. and the. If objections are received and not withdrawn, the proposals will be discussed at the Licensing and Appeals Committee meeting on 2 March to determine if they should proceed.
The proposed changes can be summarised as bringing forward the time late evening tariffs apply from 11pm to 10:30pm; increasing the charging rate; increasing the charge for an extra passenger; and increasing the cost if a taxi needs to be cleaned because of a passenger.
The proposed changes are available by visiting the Public Protection Partnership website (https://publicprotectionpartnership.org.uk) and searching for ‘Wokingham Borough Council consultation on hackney carriage tariffs’.
