For the sixth year running, Wokingham Borough Council is on track to top the national council tax collection charts for all local authorities.
Council taxpayers in Wokingham Borough continue to benefit from one of the most efficient local authority tax collection systems in the country, with the borough council collecting over 99 per cent of the council tax it is owed for 2018/19 – more than £120 million.
The national average collection rate for unitary authorities was 97 per cent last year. Each percentage point for Wokingham Borough Council equates to over £1 million of council tax – meaning that the efficiency of the council’s collection systems effectively generated in excess of £2 million more than if it had been an average performing authority.
Director of locality & customer services Sarah Hollamby said: “At a time when demand is increasing, our high collection rate helps to soften the financial challenges we face.
“I would like to thank all those residents who pay their council tax on time. This supports more than 200 council services – from caring for the elderly and those with physical and learning disabilities to emptying bins and providing modern leisure and recreation facilities.”
The council will be continuing efforts to collect the remaining less than one per cent throughout the year.
