Work has begun this week on Wokingham Borough’s next destination play area. Wokingham Borough Council has started the first phase of construction on the brand new and inclusive destination play area at Cantley Park in Wokingham.
The brand new play area, funded by developers’ contributions from new housing, will replace the existing equipment which is located close to the tennis courts and will complement the existing sport and leisure facilities at Cantley Park. The play area has been designed to encourage all children and families to play together in carefully laid out inclusive play zones.
The project has begun with the installation of the power supply for the new Yalp interactive equipment. The interactive features are designed to make playing outside as addictive as gaming, but without the screen time, with equipment such as an interactive DJ booth, dance arch and games wall.
Wokingham Borough Council executive member for environment and leisure, Cllr Parry Batth said: “Cantley Park has undergone so many exciting improvements in the last year and the new destination play area will be a great addition. The project team have created an amazing play area design with a focus on inclusivity for all children - there really is something for everyone.”
Cllr Wayne Smith, executive member for planning and enforcement, added: "This park is made possible because of the council's strategic approach to housing development. We concentrated new housing in four major developments, which allowed us to plan all of the infrastructure for those new communities and ensure the developers pay for them. This approach ensures we provide our residents with a rich variety of facilities as well as a nice place to live."
The play area is due to be completed by Jupiter Play towards the end of the year. However, the newly opened café (replacing the old changing rooms), refurbished pavilion, 3G sports pitch with floodlights and greenway route through the park are all now open to the public.
