Fourteen young athletes living in Wokingham Borough, aged 18 years old and under, have received special funding to allow them to progress in their chosen sports.
The ‘Sports Sponsorship Grant’ is awarded by Wokingham Borough Sports Partnership Fund, funded by Wokingham Borough Council.
Each year there are two cycles of award meetings where applications can be received and are reviewed by the Sports Partnership board for funding opportunities. Individuals from sports such as trampolining, rowing, athletics, gymnastics, cycling and badminton receive a grant to help them with coaching, travel and competition costs.
All the athletes awarded the funding are training regionally, nationally, club standard, county and internationally.
Cllr Norman Jorgensen, executive member for environment, sports, environmental health, leisure and libraries, said: “I wish these young athletes well as they progress in their sport and look forward to hearing about their achievements.”
Peter Evans, chairman of the Sports Partnership Board, said: “I am always amazed at the high standard achieved by the local young athletes and it is a pleasure to be involved in helping them with the costs of training to help them go on to even bigger and better things.”
